Parks in the Land of the Automobile

Everyone knows that Los Angeles is the land of the automobile and freeways.  So, it needs more open space and parks.

Well, that’s not actually true since Los Angeles has lots of open space and parklands.  But, taking a leaf out of New York’s lead with the Highline there’s now plans to create open space park areas on top of the Highway 101 between Hollywood Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard.

It's called the Hollywood Freeway Central Park and it's an innovative Los Angeles rethink on the purpose of its highways — building a concrete deck above the freeway with soil, plantings and other man-made decorative park elements.

It’s a fascinating story about how one of the strongest symbols of industrialisation (the freeway) can revert to a more natural state in the modern age.  Amazing!

So see you in the park above the freeway soon.
