Next OCN Meeting focuses on Building Defects

I’ve posted before about the Owners Corporation Network and the City Futures Research Centre at UNSW before and they’re both great groups doing lots for strata stakeholders in NSW.

Now, they’re getting together at the next OCN general meeting on Saturday 21 May 2011 when Dr Hazel Easthope will speak about building defects in her presentation A Defective System? Dealing with Defects in Strata Properties.

In her presentation, Dr Easthope will cover the following issues and highlight the results of the City Futures Research Centre’s research and thinking on the topic.

Some defects can be expected in new buildings. However, evidence from a completed survey of executive committee members and an ongoing survey of strata owners indicates that the incidence of building defects in NSW strata schemes unacceptably high and that when defects do occur they can be incredibly hard to remedy. The mechanisms currently in place to address building defects are problematic, and the limited consumer protections offered to strata owners are a cause for concern. This presentation will provide an overview of the ‘defects issue’ in NSW, drawing on new evidence from surveys with executive committee members and strata owners and will provide suggestions on further improvements that could be made to reduce the incidence of defects and simplify the processes for getting defects fixed in strata schemes.

The meeting and presentation are being held between 10.00 am and 12.00 noon at the Station House at Jacksons Landing, Pyrmont.

See you at the OCN meeting soon.

  1. Hi Francesco, thank you for your really excellent presentation at the South African Sectional Title Indaba arranged by NAMA. It was a pleasure to see you in Gauteng and I hope that your Kruger trip is proving to be good times. Best, Graham
