Parking Spot Market Develops in San Francisco

I like cars, but they are problem in cities causing congestion, delays, environmental problems and much, much more.

One of the more serious problems is parking issues in city CBD areas.  Apparently, a lot of traffic consists of drivers who have already arrived at their destination but find themselves cruising the streets, searching for an open parking spot. In some city neighborhoods, cruising makes up as much as 40 percent of all traffic. All this unnecessary traffic slows down buses, endangers cyclists and pedestrians, delays other motorists, and produces harmful emissions.

But technology may offer solutions as this pilot programme in San  Francisco demonstrates.

It’s based on the premise that one key to eliminating it is to get the price of parking right.

So, SFpark varies meter and garage prices based on demand and using smart meters to make it possible to find open spaces using the SFpark iPhone App.  It’s a really interesting idea that uses market forces and human nature to get the right outcomes.

And, here’s a short film called “Moving Beyond the Automobile: The Right Price for Parking” by Streetfilms that explains the program in more detail.

See you in the traffic looking for cheap parking … not!
