The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe meet in a Secret Apartment

Remember how Lucy walked through her wardrobe and entered the secret world of Narnia … it made for a great adventure.

Well 8 ingenious American artists (who call themselves Trummerkind) created their own adventure along the same lines by finding a secret passage and space in a shopping mall parking area in Porvidence, Rhode Island and creating an apartment in that space.

The secret apartment was 750 square feet (or # sqm), had electricity and light and was fully furnished.  To build the apartment they transported 2 tons of materials into the space.

The group used the apartment for four years between 2003 and 2007 until discovered.

Apparently, they were inspired by advertising for the shopping mall that featured one presenter saying how great it would be to live at the mall … so they did !

Their story is documented at the Trummerkind website with video, photos and explanations of what they were up to.

And, there’s a great follow up story by Bob Kerr of the Rhode Island News called The Artists Have Been Good for Everybody

It’s a fascinating story and another kind of weird apartment.

BTW … after being discovered the leader of the group was sentenced to 6 months probation for trespass.

It’s not strata as we know it … but it was living (of sorts).
