I’ve posted about high
density going underground before (see Why do we Only Think of Vertical as Up?) and wondered why developers and
planners are not seriously considering building negative high rise apartments.
Well it seems that there
are plans to do just that in some parts of the world like this exciting project
for Mexico City demonstrates.
The
Earthscraper by BNKR
Arquitectura is an architectural proposal for a massive inverted
pyramid that would be built beneath Mexico City’s Zocalo square and that extends
65 stories underground.
Because
the preservation of the iconic city square and the existing hierarchy of the
buildings that surround it in the centre of Mexico City is important the
proposal keeps the built structure out of sight.
The
design is an inverted pyramid with a central void to allow all habitable spaces
to enjoy natural lighting and ventilation. To conserve the numerous activities
that take place on the city square year round (concerts, political
manifestations, open-air exhibitions, cultural gatherings, military parades.),
the massive hole will be covered with a glass floor that allows the life of the
Earthscraper to blend with everything happening on top.
It’s an amazing concept
which I’d love to see built. And,
for others to use as an example of more innovative building designs.
